NMRC Supplemental Rules 2025

Welcome to the New Mexico Race Collective! Thanks for racing with us!

New Mexico Race Collective Supplemental Rules to the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) rulebook https://americanmotorcyclist.com/racing/racing-resources/racing-rulebook/ and only applicable to the NMRC 2026 Series Championship. Please refer to the AMA rulebook starting on page 64 for off road racing rules.

NMRC was formed in late 2022, and has been actively running races since 2023, to keep off road desert racing alive and thriving in New Mexico. NMRC is a volunteer-run collective with an oversight board formed by having one representative from each of the participating clubs. The central focus of the NMRC is to support desert racing clubs, provide a reliable scoring system, assign race numbers, and track overall points for year end trophies and awards.

GENERAL

All entrants in any NMRC race must be AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) members. You can sign up on line at https://join.americanmotorcyclist.com. All individuals that attend our events are required to sign a Race Waiver for AMA insurance compliance. Any racer under the age of 18 must have a Minor Release form completed and signed by a parent or guardian. For your convenience, the AMA offers an Electronic Annual Release for both minor and adult racers to fill out in advance of their racing events .Please ensure that any of your pit crew or guests (who are not signing up to race) sign this waiver. This waiver and the AMA rulebook has several “notes” on how dangerous off roading, particularly racing can be. It is your responsibility to ensure your own safety by entering the proper class, having a mechanically sound dirtbike, following the rules and regulations, and riding/racing within your skill level.

POINTS

NMRC uses MotoTally scoring system which requires each racer to have a transponder strip on their helmet for scoring. Every racer must bring their helmet to sign up. If you currently have a MotoTally strip, it will work fine, if not, transponder strips will be available for purchase at sign up for $10.00.

There are Eight (8) points paying events for 2025, with ONE drop. You must complete at least (4) races to qualify for year end awards. Ties will be broken in the following manner: 1) Total number of overall wins. 2)Total number of first place wins. 3)Last head to head win.

NMRC pays points per the following on each event to accumulate year end overall standings.

Riders earn performance points based on their finishes at each event (transfer points). NMRC follows the AMA’s Rider Advancement Points system (page 68 of the AMA rulebook)

*Example: An NMRC racer accumulates 106 points (using column 3-9 competitors, (4) wins, (3) 2nd places finishes). To calculate the ORPV the total points earned (106) are divided by the total number of NMRC events in which points were earned (8 races, minus one drop = 7). 106 divided by 7 = ORPV of 15.14 The rider’s ORPV of 15.14 exceeds the 15-point cutoff, and they are advanced to the next classification. All C and B are subject to this ORPV system. There are exceptions to this system, mostly concerning Youth racers, please refer to the AMA Rulebook for clarification and more information.

To participate in the NMRC Championship Series you can register online in MotoTally https://www.moto-tally.com/NMRC/SeriesRegistration.aspx and pay a $20 registration fee. You can also register for the series at any of the events as part of sign up. Pre-entry for NMRC events is only available to NMRC series members Entrants who do not care to join the NMRC series can register at the race site and run an assigned temporary number (pie plate). All registered racers will be eligible for year end awards and contingencies. The Series Referee will confirm your number once your registration has been received. Register at www.nmracecollective.com

Race number assignments: Each racer must have an assigned NMRC number that will be used for the entire season. Racers can have a choice of a preferred number within their class range, provided it has not been assigned. Typically, a racer will request a number at the start of the year and have it confirmed before pre-entry for the first race. Racers can run the same number for consecutive years, provided they register for the series before the first scheduled race. The Pro/AA class can run earned numbers, from 1-10 depending on their overall standings.

NEW IN 2026 is a timed limit (per AMA guidelines) of 3 hour maximum of race time. Clubs might indicate a number of laps per class at their event, but the actual mileage/loops will depend on the overall leader and the 3 hour time limit.
  • Tech inspection is required to ensure that all entrants have the proper number and background per NMRC, an entry sticker on front fender, and a spark arrestor (if applicable) and a bike capable of traversing the course safely. Please remember to turn off your headlight while racing.
  • It is suggested that you arrive on the start line 15 minutes before your scheduled start.

Gas must be kept in proper containers. Penalties will be assessed on any racers that speed through the pits.
  • Race etiquette dictates that if another racer is coming up on you from behind, allow room for them to pass as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • If a rider is down, STOP. If you come up on a rider that is obviously down, and not getting up or giving you any sign that they are ok, stop and investigate the situation. Get the rider #, and name if possible. We encourage every racer to have their cellphone on them and to stop and offer assistance to any downed rider. Any time race time you might have lost aiding a fellow racer will be adjusted off your score. If you are down, but ok, please give a thumbs up to your fellow racers to let them know that you are ok. If emergency aid is necessary, flag down on-coming riders to see if they can offer EMT, we will have an emergency call in number on the race entry stickers.

  • The race officially ends for all racers at the completion of the final designated lap of the overall leader. All racers are scored provided they transverse at least one lap of the course and come through the finish check.
  • Results of the race will be available the same day, usually within an hour after the last finisher. The results will be posted onsite, then on MotoTally within 2 days of the race. Once the results are posted on MotoTally, there will be a 10 day protest period.

Trophies will be made available to the racers within 30 days of their event, and accommodation should be made to mail trophies to the participants who request mailing. Racers can contact the club directly to claim any trophy after the event if they are unable to collect it at a future event. Many of the NMRC clubs decided rather than race day trophies, they wanted to personalize their awards for the winners, and have a nice awards ceremony to acknowledge their club workers, sponsors and racers.
  • Any protests of final race results must be made to the club within 10 days of the results being posted on MotoTally.

IMPORTANT CHANGE FOR 2025 -New for 2025 is that trophies will NOT be awarded on the race day. The clubs award the trophies at the next scheduled NMRC race. Trophies be made available to the racers within 30 days of their event, and accommodation should be made to mail trophies to the participants who request mailing. Trophies will be awarded at the next scheduled race in the series. Racers can contact the club directly to claim any trophy after the event if they were unable to collect it at a future event. This decision by the NMRC board was to give the clubs the opportunity to only buy the actual number of trophies needed, to personalize their awards for the winners, and have a nicer awards ceremony to acknowledge their club workers, sponsors and racers.
